Dizzy Gillespie, American Jazz Musician

0 komentar

John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie, one of the greatest Jazz trumpeters of 20th century and one of the prime architects of the bebop movement in jazz, was born in Cheraw, South Carolina and died in Englewood, New Jersey.

Nicknamed "Dizzy" because of his zany on-stage antics, Gillespie, a brass virtuoso, set new standards for trumpet players with his innovative, "jolting rhythmic shifts and ceaseless harmonic explorations" on the instrument during the 1940's period, which ushered in a definitive change in American Jazz music from swing to bebop. The last of nine children, Gillespie was born into a family whose father, James, was a bricklayer, pianist and band leader: Dizzy's mother was named Lottie. Dizzy's father kept all the instruments from his band in the family home and so the future trumpet great was around trumpets, saxophones, guitars and his father's large upright piano (his father tore down one of the walls of the house to get the piano in ) most of his young life. James use to make all of his older children practice instruments but none of them cared for music. Dizzy's father died when he was ten and never heard his youngest son play trumpet, although he did get the chance to hear him banging around on the piano, because Dizzy started trying to play this instrument at a very early age.

In 1930, Gillespie tried learning how to play the trombone but his arms were too short to play it well. That same year he started playing a friend's trumpet and heard one night over the radio a broadcast of Roy Eldridge playing trumpet in Teddy Hill's Orchestra, that was playing at the Savoy Ballroom in New York City. Young Gillespie, then 13, loved Eldridge's playing and the entire band. From that day on, he dreamed of becoming a jazz musician.

In 1933, after graduating from Robert Smalls secondary school, Gillespie received a music scholarship to attend Laurinburg Institute, in North Carolina. He stayed there for two years, studying harmony and theory until his family moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1935. In Philadelphia, Gillespie began playing trumpet with local bands, learning all of his idol Eldridge's solos from records and radio broadcasts: it was in Philadelphia that he picked up his nickname of "Dizzy.". In 1937, "Dizzy" moved to New York and replaced Eldridge in Teddy Hill's Orchestra. After a couple of years Gillespie moved on to Cab Calloway's band in 1939.

In 1937, Gillespie met his future wife, Lorraine, a chorus dancer at the famed Apollo Theater: they were married in 1940 and remained together until his death. Gillespie worked with many bands during the early 1940's (Chick Webb, Fletcher Henderson, Benny Carter, "Fatha" Hines and Billy Eckstine's seminal band ) before teaming up with Charlie Parker in 1945. Their revolutionary band ushered in the bebop era and was one of the greatest small bands of the 20th century. An arranger and composer, Gillespie wrote some of the greatest jazz tunes of his era: songs such as "Groovin' High", "A Night in Tunisia" and "Manteca" are considered jazz classics today.

With his trumpet and its upturned, golden bell, goatee, black horn rim glasses and beret, Gillespie became a symbol of both jazz and a rebellious, independent spirit during the 1940's and 50's. His interest in Cuban and African music helped to introduce those music's to a mainstream American audience. When he died he was famous and beloved everywhere and had influenced entire generations of trumpet players all over the world who loved and emulated his playing and his always positive, upbeat, optimistic attitude.

Jazz and Popular Music In The History Of Passage

This short paper, to be honest, was born of anxiety as a fan writer and observer of jazz, by the still very lack of public attention, especially Indonesia, for this type of music. Like classical music, most people are inclined to consider this type of music is too heavy, abstract, and difficult to digest. Besides that, jazz is often stereotyped as the music of the elite or the well, despite the fact that in the "well" itself, actually fans or lovers of jazz is still a minority. Even among young adults is common belief that jazz is "the music is boring old people and makes us sleepy".

Image for the emergence of jazz this unfortunate proceed from a sense of the dominant that the primary function of music is to entertain and give pleasure to the audience, with the aim of profit. The existence of technological developments, namely the emergence of the voice recorder -19 at the end of the century has resulted in major shifts in world music: if at first the music is a pure expression of human feeling into the music now industrial products and commodities trading record. Capitalism is also the music industry has shifted the old music that shows the cultural identity of each ethnic / nation in the world, and in its place emerged a new kind of music that transcends and shed the cultural differences that exist, namely the so-called "popular music". Without prejudice creativity of pop musicians (only a small pop musicians have original creativity!), Is not really a pop compositions are forms of standardized or reproduction of trends for a moment, and this phenomenon tends to take place globally.

In this case worthy of note that emerged as a jazz musical transition from "traditional" to the music "popular". In early development, jazz can in category as an example of traditional music, where music is very representative of expression and culture of black communities in the United States. As a music that represents a society that discriminated, then the development of this type of music will also experience much the same fate. Swing flow incidence in recent decades, the 1930s brought significant changes in the way people look at this music, which ultimately affect the categorization of jazz's position among the various other music. Swing era marked by the emergence of jazz bands with a large number of players (big band), which can be viewed as a form of European-style orchestration which is applied in jazz, though still maintaining basic features, such as improvisation, syncopation and blue notes (note that modest on the third and seventh notes, is characteristic of the blues and jazz). With these developments, jazz music is no longer considered "barbarians" as synonymous with black people. In those days, jazz has even become popular music, the rhythm of his swing is perfect for dancing, and at the same time jazz began to spread to other parts of the world such as Europe or Asia. Not a bit of jazz compositions from musicians like George Gershwin reliable, Cole Porter or Duke Ellington soundtrack was made, and these compositions is actually a pop song in his day.

The development of the leading jazz music entertainment on the reaction among black jazz musicians. Some of them such as Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie bebop then introduce a new style of jazz in the late decades of the 1940s. The emergence of bebop is often referred to as a revolution in jazz music, because it is said the exponent have a new spirit which aims to restore the jazz is essentially a musical "art" typical of the Negro. New flow is characterized by the development of the formation of band / combo is more minimalist with the consequences of the vast room for solo improvisations for each player. Besides the style of swing with the formation of his big band, bebop, and some variations that appear later (hard bop, cool jazz, etc.) into the main flow (mainstream) and the center of the development of the jazz world until the present.
Since the "revolution" bebop, jazz seems likely to evolve into a genre that is more exclusive than ever before and increasingly seem separate from the various other types of music. Indeed, jazz and really developed into a musical "art" with a high difficulty level as well as classical music. At the present time would be more common dropout jazz music schools, despite the fact that the initial first almost all studied jazz music in a self-taught. As a musical genre that increasingly requires seriousness, it is not surprising that began somewhat shunned jazz audiences. Especially at that time, the trend increasingly Rock'N Roll world ruled the world of popular music. If in the 1940s, jazz can be found in communities where public entertainment and dancing parties, since around 1950 and then it will feel "moved" to the intellectual and academic communities, where they are more likely to treat this music as a "disciplinary "own. If explored further, the bebop revolution, at least bring some positive effects: First, in the midst of a climate that racism is still strong until the 1960s (remember the case of the shooting of Martin Luther King, black fighters the U.S. in 1968!), Jazz began to be categorized as part of "high culture", while rock music that white people made it more a part of "mass culture". Second, with little escape from the swing style of orchestration will allow jazz musicians perform a new explorations by adapting elements of music that can enrich considered jazz. Without bebop, maybe there would be no jazz fusion, avant garde or world music that explores ethnic music from around the globe.

In later times, the more it seems that jazz is always contradictory to popular music (rock and pop), where if a person becomes a fan of this type of music that normally would reject others. What is less known is that both kinds of music that has a relationship with each other affect each other. Is not grow jazz and rock from the same root, namely the blues? Probably not many people know that the songs of The Beatles has been performed by jazz musicians as a standard track. Or that Sting, front man of New Wave era, groups of 80, The Police, is also an excellent jazz musician. As a result of the interaction between the jazz and entertainment music proved to have given birth to many new synthesis nuances that enrich both the jazz and rock. For the pop or rock musicians who adopted elements of jazz will give them a better value because it would thus be considered more qualified, while the opposite for the jazz musicians, by adopting elements of popular music will cause them more work to have the power to sell.

The emergence of various forms of synthesis between jazz and pop music is often a matter of debate among music critics, the categorization which became increasingly blurred it. Since around the 1980s, many new school is named Adult Contemporary (AC), seems to indicate that this music is for the particular age which is considered to have "adult", usually aged 30 years and over .. Music-music that can be categorized as AC include:

1. Fusion, which was born around the late 1960s, when Miles Davis, an exponent of bebop and cool jazz popularized a new variant to adopt elements of jazz with rock and soul / R & B. Miles pioneering followed by generations of musicians below. One of the most successful are Chick Corea, where he popularized the use of electronic instruments in jazz, fusion and thus can hardly be removed from the property (electronically) is. Initially, fusion is still quite heavy with jazz improvisation, but then increasingly lead to the kind of pop with a simplified composition more attractive to market tastes. This last type of and more popular with the term "smooth jazz, or sometimes also referred to contemporary jazz.
2. "Jazzy", which means "little-bit jazz" or "less nuanced jazz". This term is generally used to refer to adopt the popular music of jazz elements, usually in the chord progression (which represent the "blue note") and rhythm (rhythm) is often used in jazz such as swing, soul, Bossa Nova, and so on. Some jazzy early bearers include group Blood, Sweat & Tears (BS & T) and Chicago around the year 1968. Jazzy artists have diverse backgrounds. Some artists / musicians who are chosen as the jazzy musical concepts, some are being "jazzy" just because his collaboration with jazz musicians. Thus, the color of the music will be diverse. One of the most popular variant of this latter is the acid jazz, where the flow of new music is said to be the result of "behavior" of the DJ (disc jockey) in creating a kind of dance music by incorporating elements of jazz, soul, hip hop, and funk in a composition / song. Acid jazz is performed by groups like the Brand New Heavies and Incognito, with his beat this dynamic gain immediate applause from the younger audience.

From a historical illustration of this very brief would be obtained a sense that jazz is not merely a kind of serious and boring music. It seems more accurate to say that jazz is a process of "tug" between the musical traditions of art / classical music is elitist with entertainment that represents the aspirations of a wider audience. Of the process later this tug appeared many variants or flow in a more jazz music to enrich the treasury. In fact, jazz to offer diversity and musical explorations of love, if ignored, especially for the younger generation who are most curious. End the authors say: good luck!

Yngwie Malmsteen was born in Stockholm, Sweden, on June 30, 1963. Currently, he is known (by the fans, especially the violence, including me .. he .. he ..) as the guitar solo has a remarkable ability. Twenty years ago when he was young, impressed by their ability to improvise guitar has a lot of fishermen click mania rockers in the world. In the history of rock music, we know the names like Jimi Hendrix, Ritchie Blackmore (the sloppy From Deep Purple), Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Eddie Van Halen or Eric Clapton and Santana. They all can be a senior already legendary with every game. Yngwie Malmsteen to deepen capacity in many senior-oriented to him. Malmsteen is a phenomenon in itself, so not too much in the last two decades, he is domination a guitar solo is very talented.

When he turned 20 years old still, he surprised the world with the technique extraordinary game, as people call neo-Class melodic rock. This can be felt in her first album "Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force "in 1984 when 21-year-old. However, little seems Malmsteen first reported, not so interested in the music world. Everything changed when he accidentally watching TV, which broadcast the concert Jimi Hendrix stage some time after the death of the maestro. Malmsteen 7-year-old was fascinated with Hendrix's wild on stage that can make a hysterical operations. One thing that scar on his head when the action Malmsteen Hendrix burning and destroying his guitar on stage. Malmsteen Since that interested in playing guitar. On the day Hendrix died, when he was born too young guitarist who is ready to replace him.

Capitalization of curiosity and extraordinary persistence to experiment with the old type of Mosrite guitars and then continue with a cheaper version of the Stratocaster, Malmsteen transform itself as Blackmore. Guitar is also interested in creating a classic study of Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart and Beethoven. Apparently the structure of classical music is very useful for people to find innovation in guitar playing. Make no mistake, when Malmsteen's new 10-year-old. The mothers and sisters of the standard flute plays an important role in the success of controlling Malmsteen guitar in a short time.

Malmsteen was a concert violinist when he came from Russia, Gideon Kremer. This provides a huge influence for Malmsteen, he wanted to combine the knowledge of classical music with the ability to play the guitar and how to improve the charisma for the audience. At age 15, who has recognized the special world of the game Malmsteen as a trademark. Crazy. Then he had played in several bands and in every opportunity he had always envisioned exploring improvisation through a long game instrumental. At age 18, after trying to send a demo tape to several producers of the game, eventually he was invited to play with the band Steeler. Some time after that he moved to Alcatrazz, but because he was not envisioned feel better if you participate in developing the band, he decided to solo careers. And he spent the first album titled "Rising Force" (now known as the Neoclassical scripture rock). This album managed to bring a special Malmsteen as a Grammy nomination for "Best rock instrumental performance." It got there, he was also in the "Best New Talent", and "Best Rock Guitar" in the next year. Incredible. Since then the name of Malmsteen as sky-rebound game as a 'stupid' performance and create a new stream "Neoclassical rock."
The ears of rock fans as the game stuffed with nearly two decades by marching out album, Trilogy, Odyssey, Live in Leningrad / Trial By Fire (video gain "gold-Buy concert video" in Moscow and Leningrad), Fire & Ice (which was launched in Japan and sold more than 100,000 copies only on the first day of launch), The Seventh Sign, Magnum Opus, Inspiration, who Facing Animal, Alchemy, and Attack!.

1997, Yngwie proved that he does not qualify more than the other is a phenomenal guitar when he succeeded his great work Rockface "Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in Eb minor, op. 1 ", a work full of classical music with elements of electric guitar playing. A few years later, in 2001, Yngwie's first find the opportunity to collaborate with Japan in Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. During the year 2002, the album sold almost like roasted peanuts in the world. Then in 2003, he joined the prestigious musical tour of "G3" which is a collaboration of three masters is a dream Satriani, Vai and Malmsteen. Two years recording the album from this tour loud behavior, either DVD, CD or VHS.

In 2004, more Malmsteen working in the studio, we made the long journey to rest after two consecutive years. And he issued the album "Fury off." And some polls such as Amazon.com and Virtuocity rating "5-star" for his work. Various compliments received during the year 2004. 2005, Yngwei not stop, right in the summer, she began her tour titled "Fury World Tour" in the countries of Ireland and from there continue to move to other countries in the world.

Minor pentatonic blues scale is often called the pentatonic blues. Composition is almost the same tone with just the blues scale minor pentatonic note this blue tones (blues scale) is removed. In addition to the theory that actually blue note is flat noodles and flat sole. Flat means 'one note before' or flat noodles / b3 equal to ri and flat soles / b5 is Fi. This means also that the minor pentatonic plus b3 (flat noodles) and b5 (flat soles) is a blues scale. Just compare the minor pentatonic and blues scale E to clear the difference. If there is a minor blues song like many songs from Gary Moore is pitch from the minor pentatonic is very useful jaming time. Here are some examples of the use of a minor pentatonic scale.
